Cranioplasty in Tunisia: how does the cost compare with Europe?
For a patient in Tunisia, the question is not only “how much?” but also “in which currency?”: an imported custom implant is paid at the European price, converted into dinars. Here are the orders of magnitude, with sources.

The starting point: European prices
In France, the reimbursement tariff for a custom PEEK cranial implant has been set at €5,275 including VAT since 1 July 2026, after €5,750 and then €5,557.50 [1]. This is the price of the implant alone, excluding theatre and hospital stay.
The full hospital cost measured in the Netherlands ranges from about €6,250 per patient in Utrecht (median first admission, 2014–2020) [6] to €15,532 for a custom implant placed first-line in Maastricht, and €26,086 when it is placed after a failed bone graft [7].
The same amounts in dinars
At the interbank rate published by the Central Bank of Tunisia for 10 August 2026, one euro was worth 3.3778 dinars and one US dollar 2.9269 dinars [2]. At that rate:
| Reference | Amount | In dinars |
|---|---|---|
| Custom PEEK implant, French tariff 2026 [1] | €5,275 | ≈ 17,800 TND |
| Cranioplasty, first admission, median in Utrecht [6] | €6,249 | ≈ 21,100 TND |
| Custom implant placed first-line, Maastricht [7] | €15,532 | ≈ 52,500 TND |
| Implant placed after a failed graft, Maastricht [7] | €26,086 | ≈ 88,100 TND |
| Package advertised in the United Kingdom [3] | $16,000 – $30,000 | ≈ 46,800 – 87,800 TND |
| Package advertised in Tunisia, Monastir [3] | $8,100 – $15,300 | ≈ 23,700 – 44,800 TND |
Indicative conversion at the Central Bank of Tunisia rate of 10 August 2026 (€1 = 3.3778 TND; $1 = 2.9269 TND), rounded to the nearest hundred dinars. European amounts date from their studies and are not updated.
At the French tariff, the implant alone is already worth three quarters of the bottom of the range of a full package advertised in Tunisia. Imported at a comparable price, the custom implant would become the largest item of expenditure.
What we know about prices in Tunisia
There is no public price list for cranioplasty in Tunisia: each clinic draws up its own quote according to the implant, the length of stay and the fees. The only published figures come from medical tourism platforms and target foreign patients:
- $8,100 to $15,300 in Monastir, including tests, surgery, hospital stay and intensive care if needed [3];
- $9,000 to $17,000 for an all-inclusive package, according to another platform [4].
- India$8,000 – $14,000
- Vietnam$8,000 – $15,000
- Tunisia (Monastir)$8,100 – $15,300
- Turkey$8,000 – $16,000
- Thailand$11,000 – $21,000
- United Arab Emirates$15,000 – $28,000
- United Kingdom$16,000 – $30,000
- Singapore$20,000 – $40,000
Estimates from a medical tourism platform, accessed in October 2026 [3].
Tunisia thus sits at the level of India, Vietnam or Turkey, and well below the United Kingdom or Singapore [3]. More broadly, the Tunisian press estimates healthcare to be 40 to 60% cheaper than in Europe [5].
For a patient living in Tunisia, the actual amount depends on the clinic and length of stay, the team’s fees and above all the implant: stored bone, cement, titanium mesh or a custom implant.
What local manufacturing changes
An imported custom implant combines the foreign manufacturer’s price, international shipping, paperwork and intermediaries, all exposed to the exchange rate. Designing and manufacturing it in Tunisia changes the equation:
- no intercontinental shipping and no import intermediary;
- a price set locally, case by case, after review of the CT scan;
- direct exchange between the surgeon and the engineer for planning and design approval;
- a schedule built around the date of surgery, independent of any shipment.
This is IME TECH’s model: medical study, design and additive manufacturing in Ti-6Al-4V ELI titanium, carried out in Tunisia, with the surgeon’s written approval before any manufacturing.
IME TECH does not publish prices: the price of an implant depends on the defect, the complexity of the design and the associated parts (anatomical model, cutting guides). It is set for each case.
Coverage and questions to ask
In France, a custom implant is only reimbursed with prior approval from national health insurance, for specific indications [8]. In Tunisia, coverage depends on the insurance scheme and the care pathway: check with the CNAM or your insurer before committing.
Before surgery, ask the team treating you these questions:
- 01Which implant is planned, and why this one for my defect?
- 02Does the quote include the CT scan, design, theatre, anaesthesia and every night in hospital?
- 03What happens, and who pays, in case of complication or revision surgery?
- 04How long between design approval and surgery?
- 05What documents will I receive about the implant: identification, material, MRI instructions?
